My family always goes to the movies on Thanksgiving Day. It's usually a mid-afternoon movie and one that all the family can watch so it is usually a kids film. Now that we don't live close anymore, we still do that with our own family to make it feel like we are all still together.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part about thanksgiving, aside from all of the noise, is cooking with my family. I love the smells that float through the air the morning of turkey day. You can't wait to eat and u starve yourself all day so you have enough room in your tummy for all the goodies you are gonna eat. I love the turkey coma and the pie hangover.
ReplyDeleteI love my tradition of getting up before daylight and while I am alone in the quiet kitchen, offering up thanks to God as I get the coffee ready, make yeast rolls and get the dressing in the oven.
ReplyDeleteI love the family interaction (both positive and negative) and the different generations that all share common "inside jokes" and stories from year's past... the kids that have gotten to high school and college age playing UNO over and over with the little ones and the adults playing games after THE FEAST until everybody goes back to the platters, bowls, casserole dishes and piles of desserts for just a little bit more. Oh the joy and gaiety of family time =]
ReplyDeleteThough it may sound cliche...My favorite tradition at Thanksgiving is getting all the family together (both my family and my hubbies family)and enjoying each others company for a few hours and all the chaos that goes along with it! Thanksgiving wouldn't be the same if everything went smoothly and all was quiet! Oh and eating pumpkin pie, you can't have Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie!!! :0)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite thanksgiving tradition is looking at the toy ads with the kids. It's when Christmas finally starts to seem palpably near!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Thanksgiving traditions are cooking all the favorite foods: turkey/dressing/ham/sweet potato casserole/pecan pie/pumpkin pie/and of course boiled custard!
ReplyDeleteThen after lunch we all visit with each other; play with the babies; read the newspaper ads for Black Friday and plan our shopping trips.
THEN we get the Christmas tree out and start decorating.. WHEW!
Our Thanksgiving family tradition consists of us all gathering around for the blessing of the food. Before we bow our heads my mother in law gets out the dancing turkey. She sets it in the middle of our family circle and we all do the chicken dance!!!

I don't think that I realized that I had a Thanksgiving tradition until yesterday. This year has been the hardest of my 28 years. A diagnosis, a single word has completely rearranged my entire life. Every single aspect of me is different in the wake of the word Parkinson's. Thanksgiving was no different. This year, I knew what it was to be sincerely grateful not just for what I have but for what I don't have. When I read your post yesterday I thought, I don't really have traditions since I haven't really spent this holiday with my family in a while. So I got up like I have the past 5 years and watch Nat scurry around cooking for her family. I got ready and once again went to serve at the Salvation Army with my friends the Smitty's and was once again reminded how blessed I really am. From there I went to the Faulkner family meal where a granny that isn't mine, kissed and hugged me like I was and made sure I'd had enough to eat. I would have stayed longer but another family was waiting on me to eat. When I got to the Gray's we held hands, said grace, and dug in! Later we decorated the tree and listened to Christmas songs (which I'll be bored of inside of a week) and laughed! It wasn't until I was on my way home that I realized that my whole day was wrapped up in my friends! That's my tradition of sorts... those friends that become family! In this year of learning to do everything differently, I'll be forever THANKFUL that I have these people that come along side me... that friendship steadies my head and my heart even when my legs and arms are shaky!
